Bat

A wide, flat leather horse swatter used primarily in gaming classes. Originally a Saxon word meaning to hit or strike. Although intended to encourage the horse to run faster, it usually has the opposite effect, due to changing the horse's focus toward the rear rather than ahead. An English riding crop is also sometimes referred to as a bat.
