Saguaros have a relatively long lifespan -- 150 years or more. They may grow their first side arm at any time from 75–100 years of age, but some never grow one at all. A saguaro without arms is called a "spear."
Saguaros may grow to be over 70 ft tall. It is a protected species in much of the American Southwest.
