QUESTION:

I have a 9 year old mare that I haved owned for a little over 2 years.

She has been checked out by the vet and was in great shape. My question is: is she too old to be bred? If not, what age do you think is too old?

- K. H.

ANSWER:

In general, a sound mare can still be bred well into her 20's. After about age 12 or 13, however, her breeding efficiency will start to decline. The bottom line: your mare is probably at an excellent age to be bred.
