QUESTION:

What gear was removed from cowboy gear to cool them off... it was a famous California company's piece of gear that they found hard to wear when near the fire.

J. S.

ANSWER:

Howdy, J. S.!

I take it that you're not a westerner, since you don't seem to know the famous story of the vanished rivet on Levi's 501 jeans. There used to be a reinforcing rivet where the main seams came together at the crotch. Unfortunately, that rivet had a bad habit of gettin' too hot when a cowpoke squatted next to a campfire. The resulting burn often made it a bit hard to get back in the saddle, so in the early 1940s Levi Strauss removed the offending piece of copper from their jeans.
