QUESTION:

Howdy, Cowboy Bob,

What's a good price for reins and a saddle?

Thanks,

- J.

ANSWER:

At the risk of sounding flip, a good price is what you can afford for what you need.

I've seen decent saddle and bridle outfits priced anywhere from free to several thousand dollars.

What's really important is to find a rig that works right for you and your horse. Ask around, shop around. Check the rummage sales and ask about folks who may have sold off their animals and have some surplus tack lying around that they'd let go for what you're willing to pay.

Wherever you get it, try it out first. An uncomfortable saddle is no bargain, even if it's free.

Happy Riding!
