Q&A    Questions and Answers:

QUESTION:

I need to know about horseback riding... do you know what gear to use and if it is dangerous?

Thanx so much,

- A.

ANSWER:

The answer to your question is yep and yep. You'll need a good bit and bridle and a saddle (obviously I prefer a western saddle) and a saddle pad. You'll also need a sturdy halter and leadrope as well as hoof care and grooming supplies. For yourself, you'll need a long-sleeved shirt or blouse (snaps are better than buttons in this case). Wear long pants - preferably jeans - not shorts. And see the previous question (Q & A 68) for a discussion of boots.

Are horses dangerous? Absolutely! Take a look at Q & A 9 and Q & A 26 for some observations on the dangers of working with horses -- and how to reduce that danger.

On both of the questions you've asked, I'd suggest that you look around for an experienced horse owner who can give you a first hand introduction to these wonderful critters. You'll learn faster and better by seeing and doing than by just reading about it. (And it's a lot more fun!)

Happy Riding!
